Today I have a wonderful surprise for you! We’re raffling off two $25 gift certificates to one of my all time favorite sweet pea seed sources here in the states, Enchanting Sweet Peas. Eeeek!

I’ve been getting seed from Enchanting for years now and must say it’s the most luxurious seed ordering experience I’ve ever had. Their packaging is gorgeous, variety selection stellar, turn around time never more than a handful of days and their customer service the best around, period.

They also carry my favorite and super hard to find variety, Nimbus (bottom center of the photo above), a deep purple/grey flaked beauty (look in the Limited Availability Seed section).

    Spring time in North Dakota is magical. It is the break from the harsh cold and it comes in with a fresh feel. I start my sweet peas in March and If earlier I am inside in the cold struggling to keep them from outgrowing their pots and I seam to always set a few out too early and loose to the last few snow blizzards. Sweet peas love North Dakota and come in strong around June and live on until the first frost. Me and my kids love them and we makes lots of little bouquets for friends and ourselves. I grow mine on the front of the house and they add so much joy to the day. Spring here brings poppies and tulips and lots and lots of march born calves running around and other wild deer roaming the back yards to see what they can see and smell. Spring to my rabbit means fresh greens after a long winter of pellets and indoor light. My cat Dahlia needs to roan and see the new bugs that are now starting to check everything out. Spring is such a beautiful time here – crisp and cool. Morning in spring are really beautiful. I hope your Spring is too.

    As ‘the sweet-pea lady’ at Redwood Roots Farm in Bayside, CA (Janet Czarnecki, prop.) I am looking forward to the day that the birds stop stripping every sweet pea seedling I set out (just wised-up and covered them with remay) and I can finally start tying them up! I’ve got 420 feet planted and with the dry season we’re having the birds need every tender morsel they can find!

    Hi…our kids are in KFC together. I’ve been wanting to drop you a line. My oldest son (Spencer) is the same(ish) age as your daughter (he is extremely shy). She beat him this year at fair and then he (hopefully) helped her to learn how to do Round Robin, which he got to try out a couple years ago. I love our club. I met your sweet mom, but not you last year. :-) I am also friends with Jill who told me she is working for you and loving it. I am looking forward to my bees emerging from their box and pollinating all of our fruit trees and my kitchen garden and my permaculture-ish yard. My Autumn planted garlic is already up several inches, which gives me hope to hold out for Spring. You have inspired me to start sweet peas in my greenhouse this year. They are soaking on my windowsill. Unfortunately I only have mixed and late Spencers. I would love to try other kinds one day and I hope to officially meet you, too.

    I am looking forward to seeing if any of this year’s experiments pay off in my spring flower and vegetable beds. I have opened both up to the chickens over the winter and a friend has just gifted me with a full truckload of organic mushroom farm mulch so I am hoping that those two new elements will help create an even richer growing environment. We shall see! Here in the Northwest, spring also brings with it a few peeks of blue sky and that is always welcome.

    Well, to be absolutely truthful, one of the things I’ve been looking forward to this spring is trying some new sweet peas! I only planted one variety last year and missed the beautiful jumble of colors that we usually have. So since last summer, I’ve been plotting for this spring’s sowing. Sweet peas are always the first thing I plant (in February) and after I do so, it seems that the remaining dreary months before spring begins in earnest pass by more easily with that promise of things to come all tucked in and starting to slowly grow.

    I love sweet peas. Actually I look so forward to sweet peas and here’s is a funny story: I always seed them on St Patrick’s day and plant them in my garden in Vancouver. Then I baby them and watch them grow and then I leave for England for July and August and hardly ever get to see them bloom. :( But that’s ok, my children get them all and I get some from our village friends in E. :)

    Our daughter, Alba Rose, will be born at the end of April. This also coincides when we move into our first home and plan on bordering our front door with white roses, my grandma’s favorite flowers and our daughter’s namesake. My grandma also saved a little money, wrapped in a handkerchief and tucked into her purse, to buy a seed packet or two from the nursery around the corner. Her home and garden were filled with flowers and she was never without a small bouquet to cheer up a neighbor or granddaughter. This spring, in our first home, my two little sons, husband, and I plan on throwing ourselves in our gardens to pass on her legacy. Sweet peas would be a welcome addition.

I’m hoping to do the impossible – have red, white, & blue sweet peas in bloom for corsages for the elder women at our American Legion Hall here in the Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea in Alaska for Memorial Day.     I’m looking forward to getting my health back- I’ve had pneumonia since thanksgiving which has drained me of my energy & strength. I so look forward to the day I can get my hands in the soil, the tractor tilling and finishing our baby hoop house we had to put on hold on when I got sick.     We bought our first home last fall and due to financial restraints after was not able to do anything with the garden and landscape. This spring I am super excited to clear all the overgrown weeds and shrubs and finally get some life into this place! Flowers, flowers and more flowers….along with some veggies of course, I want to instill a love of the land into my two little ones and cant think of a better way to start :)

    Honestly, I love starting my seeds and planting my seedlings, watching my perennials come into bloom…but the thing I look forward to the most is when my farmers market customers see the first bouquets of the season. The excitement of that first market day with lots of beautiful blooms. After all, isn’t that why we do what we do, to make people happy?

    Mornings while the kids are in preschool hauling compost from an old sheep farm, getting REALLY grubby in the garden, the smell of the air, the sound of the wind, insects and birds!     I don’t know if I will ever experience what happend last year but I sure would welcome it. I was in the garden and I heard a loud rumbling coming from the sky and I looked up and saw the blue sky turn black. I must of been thousands of swallows migrating back, it was breath taking and something I will always remember and then I knew it was Spring.

    Having started my small flower farm in late April last year I am thrilled to have spring peas and bulbs this year. My favorite part of farming is the dance. Each species moves in a unique rhythm. Is there a name for plant movement? Sure they move in the wind, but they really start grooving once they are snipped and headed to the bucket. Cosmos swags its long stem and flower head, floss does the jazz hands, celosia almost head bangs, and false queen Ann’s lace looks like a Cambodian dancer’s hand. I look forward to learning the dance of spring blooms. :)

    I’m most looking forward creating arrangements with all the gorgeous blossoms and spring flowers this spring! French tulips, witch hazel, chaenomeles, frittalaria are amongst my favorite to use this season. I love the way spring flowers still go their own way after you’ve arranged them…
    And the colours are so gorgeous and cheerful.
    Mother Nature sure knows how to cheer us up after a cold and miserable winter!

      Wow, I just love sweet peas and have planted them and they sprouted but I never got flowers. I am excited for spring to begin so I can plant these beautiful spring beauties. I have memories as a child, sitting on our back steps and pink sweetpeas growing there in between the brick and the cement stairs.
