When we first moved to the country, the flower beds surrounding our house were filled with a rainbow of hundreds of bearded iris. I was a new gardener and didn’t like anything that seemed “old fashioned,” so I dug them all up and got rid of them. I still can’t believe I did that!
After visiting Schreiner’s Iris Gardens I fell in love with so many varieties and last year planted a big bearded iris patch in our back field. I love them so much that I just ordered a few hundred more! They take a little extra effort to use in arrangements since the flowers are so large, but it’s a really fun challenge.
For this week’s A Year in Flowers bouquet (#AYearInFlowers Week 22) I used: Iris Natural Charm and Beverly Sills, Columbine Chocolate Soldier, Foxglove Apricot Beauty, Ninebark, Sweet Pea Piggy Sue, Filipendula, Silene, Honeysuckle Scentsation and grass.
The goal of this community-driven project is to highlight what’s blooming in gardens across the globe each week.
How to participate in #AYearInFlowers
1) Capture.
Take a photo of flowers that are in season in your area, whether it is a fistful of flowers from your backyard or a bouquet from your local farmers market.
2) Post.
On Instagram, upload your photo and tag it with #AYearInFlowers;
On Facebook, upload your photo as a comment under my weekly post.
3) Share.
In your photo caption, please share what flowers are featured (if you know them) along with your location and date. Bonus points for listing your USDA hardiness zone and week number (i.e. #week23flowers)
Here are a few submissions posted over the past week:

A note about week numbers: week numbers are commonly used in the floriculture industry and are standardized across the years. Even though we’ve been doing #AYearInFlowers posts for a while now, this is the 22nd week of the year.
By using the #week22flowers hashtag on Instagram, you can sort photos by what’s in bloom this week all around the world. In addition, week numbers allow you to compare what’s blooming in your own garden from year to year.
Early next week, I’ll be posting my week 23 flowers to social media. If you’re participating on Instagram, please add the #week23flowers and #AYearInFlowers hashtags to your caption. Be sure to also include your zone and where you’re located in the caption. Thanks for playing along!
